TON Blockchain Rolls Out On-Chain Encrypted Messaging Feature

  • TON blockchain has rolled out a new feature allowing encrypted messages for its users.
  • The personal data of users will remain under wraps when they send a message with a transaction.
  • The messages will be end-to-end encrypted and only the recipient will be able to see the message.

Officially supported by global encrypted, cloud-based, and centralized instant messaging service Telegram, the TON blockchain has debuted a new feature enabling users to send encrypted messages on the blockchain, allowing users of the blockchain to also send private messages to each other. This marks another major development for the blockchain, which began operations a couple of months ago.

As per an announcement on July 3, the users of the TON blockchain can remain assured that their personal data will remain under wraps whenever they send a message with a transaction. It is crucial to note that earlier, the blockchain did not have the encryption feature, and therefore, every message was completely public.

The new feature developed by The Open Network (TON) will implement end-to-end encryption on messages, so only the intended recipient will be able to see the message. As per a core developer of the blockchain, Anatoly Makosov, the feature has been introduced to allow for the “personalization” of transactions:

“When sending Toncoin, Jettons, or NFTs on TON, you have always been able to include a text for the recipient, such as ‘for coffee’ or ‘happy birthday’, thereby personalizing the interaction. Now this popular feature […] is available with full encryption.”

According to the core developer, if an “apocalypse” occurs and the servers of traditional messenger operators fail, the blockchain can serve as a “reliable” and “safeguarded” method to communicate privately. The announcement noted that the feature is currently available in retail wallet apps, including MyTonWallet, OpenMask, and TON Wallet. It will be rolled out to mobile wallet Tonkeeper “in upcoming updates.”

The TON blockchain was formed from the code that was written by the team of developers at Telegram. A number of forks were created after Telegram abandoned the project due to pressure from United States regulators. More importantly, the CEO of the messaging platform. Pavel Durov, publicly supported The Open Network blockchain, which boosted the price of the native token of the blockchain, Toncoin.

As reported earlier by Bitnation on multiple occasions, the TON token outperformed the majority of the altcoins in the crypto space in 2022, while it also began the year with a spike in price. Toncoin is currently ranked as the 15th largest cryptocurrency by market cap.
