Adidas Unviels Its First NFT Wearable Collection: Virtual Gear

  • Adidas has surprised its customers with its first non-fungible token (NFT) wearable collection, titled Virtual Gear in an attempt to capitalize on the booming Web3 and metaverse industries.
  • Its nearest competitor, Nike which is also the world’s largest sportswear company, said that it plans to debut an online store and trading platform for virtual sneakers in 2023.
  • Adidas also dropped a link to a new Discord channel and is set to release a PFP dressing tool that will enable the first edition of the adidas Virtual Gear collection to be worn by PFP avatars from compatible partner collections.

Adidas, one of the biggest names in the fashion industry and a known manufacturer of sportswear, has unveiled its first non-fungible token (NFT) wearable collection, titled Virtual Gear. This collection has been described as “an eclectic mix of impossible silhouettes tying together past and future, virtual and physical, communities and creators, culture, and identity.”

The non-fungible token (NFT) collection consists of 16 pieces of limited edition items and is included in the launch of a new adidas Originals product category called “Virtual Gear.” In a Twitter post, the company said that this innitiative accelerates its “collective drive towards strengthening web3, and the adidas community-based, member-first, open metaverse pledge.”

“Looking ahead to a future not yet realized is a series of impossible designs, the collection includes 8 silhouettes within 16 variations, with some rarities even being chosen by our community,” said Adidas while dropping a link to the official Discord channel of the collection.

“We’re laying down a marker in this new age of originality – one that unquestionably serves the community, heroes the purveyors and collectors of emerging style and culture, benefits the value creators, and supports the diversity of expression and utility that blurring virtual worlds has allowed us all to explore,” said VP of the adidas /// studio, Erika Wykes-Sneyd said in a statement.

The entire Adidas community can join to Discord channel which would enable them get access to all the information and other items as well. Interestingly, the company is also set to release a PFP dressing tool that will enable the first edition of the adidas Virtual Gear collection to be worn by PFP avatars from compatible partner collections Bored Ape Yacht Club, Mutant Ape Yacht Club and Inhabitants. The dressing tool will allow users to change their PFP’s outfits like any regular avatar, making the entire experience more rich.

“With our community and creator ecosystem at the core, adidas will explore every viable utility, platform, and experience within Web3 to unlock new possibilities for our wearables, with a focus on tangible value and immutable utility for our community members,” Wykes-Sneyd added.

The announcement from Adidas comes at a time when its nearest competitor, Nike, the world’s largest sportswear company, said that it plans to debut an online store and trading platform for virtual sneakers in 2023. The new platform has been named .Swoosh and Nike will debut company goods on the platform, allowing users to collect and showcase their purchases to various people.
