La plateforme populaire de trading d'actions et de crypto-monnaies Robinhood Markets a annoncé l'achat de toutes les participations que le fondateur de l'échange de crypto-monnaie en faillite, Sam Bankman-Fried, également connu sous le nom de SBF dans le domaine de la crypto-monnaie, avait acheté à l'entreprise. La participation a été saisie par le gouvernement américain après que l'entrepreneur en cryptographie a été accusé de manipulation et de fraude par les procureurs. 

SBF a acheté près de 55 millions d’actions de Robinhood Markets en 2022, avant l’effondrement de son échange cryptographique. Il est intéressant de noter que les plateformes de trading d’actions et de cryptomonnaies ne réalisaient pas beaucoup de bénéfices à cette époque, mais il semble que la situation ait changé pour la société basée à Menlo Park, en Californie.

Selon un dossier déposé auprès de la Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) des États-Unis le 31 août, Robinhood Markets acheté around 55,273,469 shares for roughly $606 million from the US government. The Department of Justice (DoJ) seized the shares from Bankman-Fried and FTX co-founder Gary Wang’s holding firm, Emergent Fidelity Technologies, in January. The holding firm filed for bankruptcy the next month. 

“We are happy to have completed the purchase of these shares and look forward to executing on our growth plans on behalf of our customers and shareholders,” said Robinhood chief financial officer Jason Warnick.

It is important to note that the purchase had been coming for a while. The Nasdaq-listed firm’s board of directors had approved the deal as per the Q4 2022 rapport publié par Robinhood. Il est intéressant de noter que les actions ont été saisies après que SBF et Wang ont garanti les actions pour contracter un prêt auprès de BlockFi, une plateforme de prêt crypto. 

Un dépôt auprès de la SEC du 30 août a dit the US District Court for the Southern District of New York had approved the purchase “free and clear of any claims, interests, liens, and encumbrances.” The repurchase was made with the US Marshals Service.

Comme indiqué précédemment par Bitnation, Robinhood a licencié environ 7% de ses effectifs, which amounted to around 150 employees. The decision has been made to “adjust to volumes and better align team structures,” as per CFO Jason Warnick.
